Users and Groups (QMS)
From GWAVA4
The User function tab and Group function tab in the QMS (Quarantine Management System) are both available to administrators. Both serve similar purposes and have nearly identical interfaces. Hence, both are discussed below, with specific differences explicitly outlined.
An administrator typically uses the User function tab to:
- Create or delete a user
- Change what group the user belongs to.
- Edit a user's authentication information, addresses, or explicitly granted rights, Event Scope, and Secondary address
- Change a user's miscellaneous settings (these are the same settings the user could have set in the Options function tab)
An administrator typically uses the Group function tab to:
- Create or delete a group
- To change the membership of a group
- To add rights, Event Scope, and Secondary addresses which all group members will receive.
- Set default miscellaneous settings initially inherited by the group members at first login.
Before continuing, please review Rights, Event Scope, and Managed Addresses, which contains fundamental concepts the administrator should understand.
At the User (Group) function tab, the top half of the page is a list of all users (groups) registered in the system, either by their own self-registration or because an administrator has added them.

Viewing the User/Group
To view the details of a user (group), click on their user (group) id. The user's (group's) information will be automatically loaded and the words "User <username> loaded" ("Group <groupname> loaded") will appear.
The bottom half of the screen shows the user (group) details. This is divided into 5 sections, similar to those in User Options
- Core Settings - Core identifying information.
- User (Group) Rights - Rights assigned explicitly at the user (group) level
- Event Scope - Event Scope assigned explicitly at the user (group) level
- Addresses - Secondary addresses assigned at the user (group) level
- Miscellaneous - Miscellaneous settings assigned at the user (group) level
- NOTE: As you make changes to your configuration, the disk icon
in the upper right corner of the page will become active and the words SAVE CHANGES will appear. Do not forget to click the icon to save your changes before moving to another page, or your changes will be lost.
Deleting a User/Group
To delete the user (group), click on the user (group) and click the Remove button. You will be asked to confirm your action. There is no way to undo your action, so be careful!
Deleting a user or group in no way affects the actual messages stored in the QMS.
You may not remove yourself (the user you are logged on as) or the default group.
- NOTE: If you delete a group, all users that are members of that group will lose all benefits of any inherited rights, Event Scope, Addresses, etc. Also, the user will now show as being assigned to group (none).
Creating a New User/Group
To create a new user, simply specify a non-blank and unique new User ID in the Core Settings section, and then click the SAVE CHANGES icon. If the user already existed, the save will overwrite the old user; if not, a new user is created.
To create a new group, you specify a non-blank and unique new Group ID in the Core Settings section and then click the SAVE CHANGES icon. If the group already existed, the save will overwrite the old group; if not, a new group is created.
Be careful not to grant excessive or insufficient rights before saving a new group or user.
Core Settings (User)
The Core Settings for a user looks like this
You may set a UserID, the preferred authentication method (GWAVAMAN or SMTP), the Primary E-Mail Address the user will use to login (if using SMTP authentication; otherwise the user will use the UserID normally), and their Group membership. You can only assign a user to one group.
Core Settings (Group)
The Core Settings for a group looks like this
You may set a Group Name and the membership of the group. Because users can only belong to one group, if a user is assigned to this group, they will lose all rights, addresses, Event Scope, etc inherited from the previous group.
Rights (User, Group)
All rights are listed, and can be enabled/disabled at the user (group) level.
Event Scope (User, Group)
All Event Scopes are listed, and can be enabled/disabled at the user (group) level.
Addresses (User, Group)
The functionality for this section is similar to that of the User Options, except that since an administrator has absolute trust, they are not required to authenticate to add any secondary interface:
Miscellaneous (User, Group)
The choices here are identical to the User Options section. The administrator may set or override options at the user level, or set initial options (inherited until the user overrides them) at the group level.
