Guide to the User Interface
From GWAVA4
The main interface for GWAVA looks something like this when you log in
There are three major sections to the interface.
- Navigation area - by clicking on various tabs (
), and then expanding an interface tree, the administrator can find the desired administrative options.
- Content Area - After the administrator selects an option, the configuration choices are presented here. There is also a Welcome Content Area presented whenever the administrator first logs in, or selects Home, from the Tab Strip.
- The Tab Strip - Some basic navigation options are here, Support and Log Out being the most important.
Each of these will be discussed in detail below.
Contents |
Tab Strip
The choices here are all pretty straightforward.
- Home - reloads/refreshes the entire interface. One case where this is useful is after creating bookmarks, which are discussed later on in this page.
- GWAVA.com - Loads http://www.GWAVA.com into the content area. Useful for checking what's going on at GWAVA.
- Support - Puts the GWAVA 4 support bulletin board from http://support.gwava.com into the content area. Allows you to interact with other GWAVA users, ask questions, report bugs, make enhancement suggestions.
- Logout - Logout of the GWAVAMAN administrative interface. For security reasons, it's wise to do this before leaving your desk.
Navigation Area
You can click on the tabs (
, to expand a subsection.
Home Pages
Initially the only subsection that is pre-expanded is the Home Pages subsection.
From here you can click Home, which reloads the content area with the Welcome Content Area contents, or click on Quarantine Manager, which provides a list of all of the Quarantine Management System (QMS) servers installed in the system. The administrator has full control over which messages are stored in the QMS, usually items that violate the organization's e-mail policy, like spam. See QMS Introduction for more information on this topic.
Bookmarks
If you click on the tab next to Bookmarks, you'll see
Bookmarks are simply time-savers. With a large multi-server network, it might be difficult to find the specific page that you are looking for. Or maybe you need to assign a simple task to a subordinate, but the page is deeply buried.
The Bookmarks subsection works much like a web browser. You can create a bookmark from almost any content area page in the GWAVA interface, by clicking the [Image:GMANBookmarkButton.gif]] button which appears in the upper right corner of most content area pages. You can then view the pages linked to these bookmarks in the Bookmarks subsection by clicking the appropriate link (an example shown above is the "Provo Server Logs", which will display the server logs for the Provo server in the content area)
You may also delete and update the book marks by selecting Manage quick access pages. The content area will display the following:
Click
to save a change, and
to delete a bookmark. Use the Arrow icons (
) to alter the order in which the bookmarks are shown
The icons at the upper right of the content area are an example of GWAVA's common function buttons. See the Common Function Buttons section below under the Content Area discussion.
Documentation
The documentation subsection loads parts of this wiki into the content area.
System Management
System Management is where the administrator goes to create administrator accounts, set default settings, run advanced system tools, etc.
The System Management subsection is an example of a typical tree-view navigation. These are used heavily in GWAVA's navigation area, particularly in System Management and Server/Scanner Management. Click the icons to expand or contract the tree branches. In this example, we've clicked on both the
and
icons to display the System Management and Advanced branches.
System Management Branch
- Administrator accounts - create, edit, delete administrator accounts. See User Management
- System Information - Display information about this server and other servers in the GWAVA network. See System Information.
- Default settings - Set default settings for the GWAVA network. Each server introduced to the network afterwards will inherit these settings. See Default Settings for the Network
- Online updates - Check for updates to GWAVA and apply them. You are often directed here by the GWAVA Welcome screen, which informs the administrator of an available update. See below, and Updating Your GWAVA Server
- Package Manager - Install optional add-on packages for GWAVA. See Package Manager
Advanced Branch
Use the items located under the Advanced branch to
- configure Engines, Interfaces, Scanners, etc. in non-standard ways. For example, for linking an Engine to multiple Interfaces to share the configuration. See Servers,Interfaces, Engines, & Scanners - Basic Objects for more information.
- access the System Tools. Here you can perform low level database editing, rename or remove a server, and perform replication diagnostics.
Server/Scanner Management
It may prove useful to read Servers,Interfaces, Engines, & Scanners - Basic Objects before continuing.
The Server/Scanner Management subsection is the heart of GWAVA administration. The administrator will spend 90% of their time in GWAVAMAN in the content area pages linked to this subsection.
The top node of each branch of this subsection is a server that is a member of the GWAVA network. Every server in the network will be a separate top node.
Beneath the server, you'll find information relating to the server itself, as well as any Scanner objects that have been installed on the server (such as MTA, POA, and GWIA scanners).
An example is the following. This is a server named Provo2, with one scanner (GWIA) installed on the server.
Server Management
The Server Management section allows the administrator to
- set various server level options (General Server Options) such as the IP interface and host names
- view logs (Logging) of the various GWAVA 4 Components
- view server status (Viewing the Server Status, Scanner Status, and Statistics)
Wizards
The Wizards section is where the administrator can
- install a new Scanner, such as GWIA, POA, MTA scanners (Installation)
- migrate GWAVA settings to GWAVA 4. (GWAVA 3 Migration)
Manage Scanners
The Manage Scanners section is where the administrator configures the individual scanner.
Fundamentally, this is where the administrator defines the organization's e-mail policy. It is here for example, that you can
- turn on and off antivirus protection (Stopping viruses)
- set up spam controls (Stopping spam)
- block undesirable content (Text filtering, Fingerprinting, Attachment Filename filtering)
- prevent oversized messages (Oversized Messages)
- stop or monitor messages originating from specific addresses or IP addresses (Source and Destination Address filtering, IP Address filtering)
- set up exceptions for your e-mail policy (Managing exceptions)
- adjust notification options (Notification Options)
- edit the interface properties (Configuring POA Job Schedules, GWIA Interface Properties, MTA Interface Properties)
- view statistics (Viewing the Server Status, Scanner Status, and Statistics)
- set miscellaneous options (General Scanner Options, Global Quarantine)
An expanded view of the Manage Scanners section is displayed below:
Content Area
The content area normally displays a page linked to whatever the administrator selects in the navigation area.
Common Function Buttons
The icons at the upper right of the content area are an example of GWAVA's common function buttons. Not all buttons appear on all pages. Icons include:
-
- The disk icon. This is normally used to save changes on a page. The Manage Bookmarks page is a rare exception. When changes are made on a page (such as clicking a checkbox, adding/deleting a row, etc.) the disk icon changes in color from gray to dark blue, and SAVE CHANGES appears in red next to the button. You must click the disk icon to save your changes, or they will be lost once you switch content.
-
- clicking on this button allows the user to save a bookmark in the Bookmarks subsection, with whatever descriptive title they prefer. This button is not visible in the Manage Bookmarks page, because it doesn't make sense to bookmark this page.
-
- clicking on this button displays the Preferences dialog. See User Management for more information.
-
- this button simply refreshes the content area. The currently selected item in the Navigation Area remains selected.
-
- Displays a short description of the page, and some of the options that can be set on the page. A typical help window replaces the navigation area temporarily. Here is the help page displayed when clicking this button in the Manage Bookmarks content area page.
Click the
to close the Help window.
Welcome Screen
When you log into GWAVAMAN, before the administrator has chosen any items from the navigation area, the content area is automatically loaded with an initial screen resembling the following
- The top contains promotional and informational material from GWAVA.
- The bottom left displays some basic statistics and status information about the server that you've connected to, switchable, between hourly, and overall display, by clicking the
and
buttons. For more detailed information, see Viewing the Server Status, Scanner Status, and Statistics.
- The bottom right displays if you are running an up to date GWAVA version, if you are not, a hyperlink displays to run the Update Manager, and gives you some pertinent news information. See Updating Your GWAVA Server for more information.
If the Welcome Screen appears instead and displays a Setup Wizard and video tutorials, this means the network has not fully been configured. See Your First Server.
