Situation

Nearly all messages are being bounced back for authentication failure. Bounceback messages look similar to this:
Subject: Fw: Mail System Error - Returned Mail > > > -------------------------------------------------- > From: "Mail Administrator" > Sent: Monday, May 02, 2011 6:34 PM > To: > Subject: Mail System Error - Returned Mail > >> This Message was undeliverable due to the following reason: >> >> Each of the following recipients was rejected by a remote mail server. >> The reasons given by the server are included to help you determine why >> each recipient was rejected. >> >> Recipient: >> Reason: Authentication failed >>

Resolution

This problem is most likely the result of incorrect settings on the Configure Domains page:

In most cases the 'auth username' and 'auth password' fields should remain blank.  The only case in which these fields should be filled in is when all SMTP communications need to be authenticated with those credentials.

Remove those settings, save changes, and then messages should no longer be bounced back for this reason.
